Diamond Jewelry Shopping Tips

Diamond Jewelry Shopping Tips

Now more than ever, it's important to be sure that the special people in our lives know just how grateful we are for them, and the life events we share with them.

Did you know that colorless Diamonds are extremely rare?  Diamonds are available in a multitude of colors (as shown above) and in a myriad of shapes. The most commonly seen, natural, diamonds have varying shades of yellow in them. Color is also one of several elements that make a diamond a one-of-a-kind (OOAK). In this post we offer, three tips to consider when shopping for a Diamond engagement jewelry:

1.  Ask to see the diamond unset.  While it may be easier to choose the right diamond shape by seeing it installed in a setting, the metal in the setting will skew the color of the diamond.  Gold metals will make a diamond with any yellow in it look more yellow than it really is while white metals will make the diamond look more white than it really is.

2. Request information about the metal content.  Are you considering White Gold jewelry and the jewelry recipient is allergic to nickel?  If so, you have two options:

  • choose Rhodium plating which will prevent tarnishing and provide a barrier between the metal and the skin; however, plating is not permanent and will require re-application, at least annually; or,
  • choose 14k White Gold Palladium where palladium is a substitute for moast, if not all, of the nickel found in the traditional 14k White Gold metal composition and eliminates the need for annual re-plating.

 3. Make time.  There are beautiful diamonds fit for any budget.  There are 6 quality levels, 5 color levels (not including the fancy colors), 5 basic cuts and an almost infinite number of sizes to consider.  To find the diamond with the right combination of characteristics, expect to allocate at least an hour of shopping time to selecting the diamond(s).
